In order to (IOT) be eligible to participate in Sea Cadet International Exchanges, a cadet must meet or exceed the following prerequisites:
- have attained the age of 16 years as of the first day of the exchange and not be 18 years before 1 April of the year of the exchange,
- have successfully completed Phase IV from the Corps program,
- hold the rank of PO2,
- have completed any intermediate or 6 to 8 week specialty course,
- have the necessary eligibility requirements to obtain a Canadian passport,
- be strongly recommended by the Corps Commanding Officer,
- be strongly recommended by the Zone Training Officer,
- be strongly recommended by the RCSU J3 Area,
- be functional in English, which signifies a moderate understanding of the language and an adequate ability to express one's self in English, specifically:
- he/she can understand the person talking to him/her most of the time,
- he/she can ask questions and express himself/herself with little hesitation, and
- he/she can be understood (verbally and in writing) even if the grammar used is not always perfect, and
- he/she can understand the person talking to him/her most of the time,
- medical and physical limitations as described in para 11 below; and
- Exchanges may include rigorous training (e.g., long distance walking and hiking) and visit programs conducted in extreme heat and humidity and some host countries may have certain limitations. It is important that all applicants, including EOs, have a high level of physical fitness, be free of any ailment or condition (physical or psychological) or injury (including casts, braces and medical / therapeutic taping), and/or limitations which:
- requires or may require treatment, including the requirement for the use of an inhaler or epi-pen;
- precludes or may preclude an individual from following direction and taking part in any activities/ training and/or
following safety requirements; - requires special dietary requirements or a peanut free environment, as they will not be accommodated; and
- cadets wishing to participate in the United States Exchange shall not have any medical participation limitations.
